Organic farming is an agricultural production system that minimizes the use of synthetically produced fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators, and livestock feed additives. To maintain soil productivity and fertility and to control weeds and pests, organic farming relies primarily on crop rotations, crop residues, animal manure, legumes green manure (crops that are planted specifically to be returned to the soil), and biological pest control. It is based on minimal use of off- farm inputs and on management practices that restores, maintain or enhance ecological harmony.
